Aspenwood

Aspenwood is a small income-sharing community that is part of the larger community of Pion Ecovillage. We are located in the lush Pojoaque Valley of Santa Fe, New Mexico, just a few miles from the Santa Fe National Forest.

Aspenwood is committed to building a diverse egalitarian society that embraces ecological and social sustainability, diversity, feminism, multiculturalism, alternative lifestyles, nonviolence, cooperation and caring about each other. We value energy spent on improving interpersonal communication and deepening our connections to each other and the environment around us.

We share delicious vegetarian meals together several times a week. We have several fruit trees (plum, apricot, apple, pear) and an organic vegetable, herb and edible flower garden.

We work and play together well, and like to laugh and be silly and affectionate. We also highly encourage and support creative expression. We have meetings as needed (usually weekly), and make major decisions by consensus.

Blackberry

Blackberry, formerly known as Community Evolving, is a close-knit intentional family committed to living, working, learning and growing together in the Sierra Foothills of California. A decade of intention and evolution has landed us on 50 acres of beautiful forest near the Yuba river. Our land includes the forest, a lovely meadow, several potential building sites, a 3/4 acre garden and a small orchard.

Having lived here for a number of years, we now realize that this magical land--the forest we call home--needs our protection. For this reason we've decided to create an environmental learning center, to help others appreciate the integrity of the forest ecosystem.

As a result of refining our focus to become an educational center, we will need to design and build more facilities for visitors and staff. We need initiators for this project: people with experience in designing environmental curriculum, permaculture, organic gardening and forest management as well as builders, teachers and a bookkeeper.

As a community, we see ourselves setting an example of healthy social change and responsible stewardship of the Earth. We value people involved in personal change work and encourage those who are active in environmental protection, AIDS work, and other just causes.

We are an income-sharing group, working to perfect an egalitarian economic system, based on "from each according to one's abilities, to each according to one's needs". Currently our money comes from part-time work off the land, interest income and a cottage industry: Footloose sandals. Since we all interact with the children, there are several fundamentals of child-rearing that we are committed to. These include practicing non-violence in all our interactions and incorporating our children's' needs and desires into our decision- making process.

In our daily lives we like to experiment with various structures and rituals gleaned from many sources. We enjoy gathering in a circle each day to sing a song and check in with each other. We often celebrate the turning of the seasons together.

If you are interested in visiting, please write to give us an idea of who you are. After some correspondence, we may invite you to spend up to a week with us for an initial visit. We ask for a contribution of $4-$10 a day to help with expenses.

Ganas

Ganas started in NYC in 1978 with six people. We now have over 90 adults of varied ages, philosophies and ethnicity. We live in ten well-maintained buildings in Staten Island, near the ferry to Manhattan. We have five resale shops that sell furniture, clothing, household goods and more.

Our purpose is to learn to dialogue with emotional as well as conceptual truth, love and intelligence. Individual feedback is integral to our work. Every morning, at our planning session, we gather to talk about personal, work and community issues, and to plan and decide things. Twice a week, in the evening, we have feedback learning groups. Activities are open to everyone, but participation is optional.

People may work outside the community, or in our stores and residences if work is available. Visitors are welcome for short or long stays, but may have to wait to visit if space is full.

If you are interested in visiting, contact Susan.

Krutsio

Krutsio is located in the Mexican state of Baja California. The community is on the beach in a desert area along the Pacific Coast, about 550 kilometers south of Ensenada. There are two adults and two children currently living on the land, with room for more. Founded in June 1976, Krutsion holds as main principles equality, cooperation, internationalism and appropriate development. The community wants to attract a culturally diverse group of people; though the present members are Spanish-speaking, much of the communication at Krutsio takes place in Esperanto, the internationalist language.

Krutsio has a vision to create a Meditation Dome on the land, as a way of facilitating a group approach to the spirit. The Dome will include a meditation room, which may be used for activities such as singing, dances and prayer. There will be space for artistic and holistic therapies, as well s a library and resource area.

Support for this project is welcome, and may come in a variety of forms. If you are interested in preparing for or working on this project, if you have new or used materials to donate, or if you are interested in giving financial support, please contact Krutsio for more information.

Shantagani

Shantagani is a subgroup, or “pod” of Heathcote Community, which is located in Northern Maryland, between Baltimore and York, PA. We live in a beautiful wooded valley that holds 112 acres of streams, wildlife, and hiking trails. Community members live in a 150 year old gristmill, a 100-year-old farmhouse, a 200-year-old log cabin, and several outbuildings. As a community, we eat dinner together each night, have weekly community meetings, “well being” meetings that deal with interpersonal relationships and emotions, do community work projects, and participate in quarterly retreats. Decisions are made through consensus. We have each made a commitment to deal honestly and forthrightly with one another and to let the good of the community as a whole guide our decisions. We strive to foster gender balance and a diversity of culture, spirituality and thought.

Heathcote values include building community in a way that models a lifestyle in harmony with the Earth. We are committed to creating a permaculture demonstration site at Heathcote where we can live sustainably and guide others on this path. This includes growing much of our own food organically in four community gardens and exploring alternative energy sources. We also plan to build alternative, energy-efficient group housing with individual and family units. One of the driving forces behind the creation of Shantagani was the desire to support members in creating educational programs to teach others what we’ve learned in these areas.

The word Shantagani means “peaceful tribe”. Shantagani’s mission is to engage in the practice of income sharing so that we may meet our own needs using as few resources as possible while developing educational programs, community businesses, and improved physical infrastructure at Heathcote, as well as promoting ecological sustainability and social and economic justice at Heathcote and in the world.

Shantagani members currently create income through outside jobs and pool our income and expenses. Anything left over is divided up as personal allowance. We hope to grow and develop businesses of our own so that we can reduce commuting and enjoy working together. Membership in Shantagani is open to all members of Heathcote community. Heathcote is usually looking for new members, and always welcomes visitors and interns.

Tekiah

Tekiah Community is a small income sharing group within the broader base of Abundant Dawn Community. We are located on 90 acres in the beautiful Appalachian Highlands.

Some of our core values include clear and ongoing communication, ecological responsibility, growing organic food, emotional as well as physical/economic connections of respect, trust and support, consensus decision making, spirituality, and being of service to self, life and others.

In 1995 we became the first income sharing pod of Abundant Dawn Community (AD). Abundant Dawn intends to eventually be a large community (possibly 50 -100) made up of smaller subgroups, which we call pods. Pods are small ( 5 to 15 adults) decision making groups that live together and provide an ongoing support system. Membership is at the pod level and each pod will have a designated amount of land for it's use. Within the guidelines of AD's vision statement, land plan and other broad agreements, pods are encouraged to develop their own way of living and sharing together.

We are busy nurturing our new cottage industry - producing hemp hammocks and bags. Other work we do includes agricultural research and working at a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm. we are also preparing to develop infrastructure and build on our new pod site.

Terra Nova

Terra Nova, founded in 1995 by experienced communitarians, is working toward a cooperative, intimate, and sustainable town life. We live on a quiet street in Columbia, Missouri. We want to buy more properties in our area and establish an ecological neighborhood of close-knit communitarians, sharing lives and resources.

Our lifestyle emphasizes careful consumption choices. Our diet is primarily vegetarian. We are gardeners and we're in the process of linking up with other individuals and households interested in growing food in town. We're conscientious recyclers. It is easy to walk, bike, to take the bus to most places we want to go.

We share the income from our work to support ourselves and develop the community. Current work includes making rope hammocks, physical therapy, and substitute teaching. The community makes no claim on members' other financial resources, but such resources may only be used for activities the community agrees are ethical and not consumeristic.

Terra Nova makes its decisions by consensus. Devoting time to share our personal lives and discuss how we're getting along with each other improves the quality of our decisions and helps the group function better. This personal / interpersonal work also enhances our self-knowledge, resulting in a life that is more full and free.

Columbia is a medium-sized university town. We enjoy the libraries, films, music, theater, dances, and gatherings with friends and family. We are presently strengthening our ties with other community groups and activist organizations.

Please contact us if this interests you. We'll send you information about visiting and joining.
