The request for statistical indicators continues to increase, in order to help public decision -making or to guide the choices made by companies. However, we have been witnessing for a few years a growing gap between the public perception of certain economic phenomena and the information produced by statisticians. The drop in purchasing power has thus been one of the major themes of the 2007 presidential campaign when INSEE estimates that the purchasing power of the French has increased by more than 3% that year, one of the strongest increases recorded in recent years. Failure of the statistical information system or bad apprehension of reality by citizens ? This is the central question addressed by this round table on economic indicators in a democracy.
The difficulty inherent in the production of good quality figures, comparable in time and space and relevant with regard to the issues faced by public decision -makers and private actors, has been largely underlined. In particular, the production of data going beyond simple national averages is often a challenge. For purchasing power for example, the absence of exhaustive information on household consumption and savings behavior makes an approach to the evolution of the price index differentiated according to the income or the size of the households.
In addition, globalization, the emergence of an economy of quality, the dissemination of the Internet have considerably modified the conditions of production, but also of “ consumption »Statistical information. Consequently, our national accounting system, inherited from the post-war period, is still suitable ? The status of INSEE, independent while being attached to the Ministry of Economy and Finance, he really assures the best conditions for developing national public statistics ? To what extent can we take example from other countries, especially in the United States, to develop public statistics in France ?
These questions were strongly debated by the stakeholders of the round table, from producer and consumers of statistical data and public authorities.
